Michigan Motorcycle Helmet Laws
Michigan law requires that anyone wishing to ride on a motorcycle, (e.g., a motorcycle rider and/or a passenger on a motorcycle), regardless of age, must wear a helmet. However, the state’s helmet law also has a number of exceptions that would allow a driver to forgo wearing a helmet.
Helmet use for riders over the age of 21 is not required if:
- The rider has had a motorcycle endorsement on their operator’s license for at least 2 years
- The rider has successfully completed a motorcycle operator training safety course
- The rider is covered with an insurance policy of at least $20,000 in first-party medical benefits
Michigan’s helmet law also states that helmet use is also not required for passengers who:
- Are at least 21 years of age
- Have at least $20,000 in first-party health insurance plan, in addition to the operator’s required insurance of $20,000
Accident Statistics
In 2020, Michigan saw a total of 3,092 total motorcycle accidents, with 160 fatalities.
Michigan, sadly, lost a total of 134 people in motorcycle accidents in 2019. While there isn’t helmet data on 8% of the victims, of the remaining 92% it appears that the numbers were split right down the middle with 46% having died while wearing a helmet, and 46% had met their end without a helmet.
